Home Fashion (and Regular Fashion) for Less

One of the things I like to do in my spare time is sew.  My mom is a seamstress, my grandma is a seamstress,  and I actually grew up with a trestle sewing machine in my room (that had long before had the old sewing machine replaced with an electric machine).  I still have that machine, but it’s causing me a bit of trouble right now.  So of course, my first instinct is to start lining up the projects I want to take on as soon as it’s fixed.  Which shouldn’t be a problem because there are literally three different sewing machine repair shops within two blocks of where I live.  Weird, no?

Some of the things I want to do are little, like make new pillow covers for our couch with this fabric:

Waverly Chippendale Fretwork in Mist

And some of the things are big, like re-upholstering our couches in something like this:

Waverly Heritage Fabric in Cream

But one of the things I’m most excited about is trying to make this dress:

Rose Trellis Taryn Gown from J.Crew

(which is on sale for $350!) Out of this pattern:

Vogue Patterns

Still trying to find the right fabric for that one, but I think it has serious potential.  I just need to find a good oversized floral printed georgette or chiffon.

But if I had the right machine (and were really ambitious), here are some of the other projects I’d love to take on:

Butterick Patterns for Room Accessories

But in these fabrics:

Waverly Ticking

Filipa/Cliffside Springwater

Checkmate Seabreeze

And of course lots of solid white canvas and linen.  I still think that monochromatic palettes are really graceful when they’re done right (i.e. with lots of texture and visual interest – whether that be a beautiful view out the window or a focal point of art).

That’s all for now, I think I’m going to go try to revive my machine one more time before I bring it in to the doctor.  Poor little Singer, it sang so well!
